Mmmmm don't you just love to tuck into a great big bowl of fruit especially when it has lots of juicy berries. Yum yum. My favourites are blackberries, blue berries and mulberries.
There used to be the biggest mulberry tree near my house. My brother loved having mulberry wars with kids after school, only to have to face the music with mum when he arrived home looking like he just popped out of a jar of jam.
Humans are not the only ones who love berries. Birds love to chomp into them as well. Quite often, when they have a belly full they will sit on top of the clothes line and make a great big mess of the washing. My mum always complained about the stains on the clothes and the extra work she would have because she would have to wash the clothes again! Now I don't know if you have ever had mulberries squashed on your clothes but they make a dreadful mess and terrible stains. It is probably a good idea to eat them when you are wearing a dark coloured shirt.
Berries always taste absolutely delicious when they have been picked fresh from the bush, washed and chilled in the fridge. When I really want an extra treat I mix the berries in a bowl with other scrumptious fruits like banana and mango and the biggest scoop of ice cream. Wow I am thinking about this as I write and I am licking my lips just thinking about those juicy berries!
There are lots of berries on all types of bushes and trees. However, you can't eat all types of berries. Some of them can actually make you really, really sick and can even be poisonous. It is best not to pick the berries unless your mum or dad has given their permission.
Keep on eye on your baby brother or sister too because, you know what little babies are like, they crawl around putting anything they find on the ground into their mouths.
Be especially careful at the park where there may be a tree nearby that has poisonous berries that may have fallen to the ground, it is a good idea to spread a blanket for babies to crawl on.
Mum, Dad or your grandparents have been around a lot longer than you, so they have had years to learn about berries and are the best teachers.
The next time that you are shopping at the fruit market with your mum, ask her to show you all the different berries and if you are really good she might even buy some for you to take home and try.
